The short answer

Alaska has no statewide tanning law. A full-text search of the Alaska Statutes and the Alaska Administrative Code for "tanning" finds only fish-and-game provisions on tanning animal hides. There is no state minimum age, parental-consent rule, tanning license or signed statement. Federal equipment rules and any local ordinances still apply.

What Alaska's tanning law covers

Alaska has no statewide tanning law. The Alaska Legislature's own search indexes the full text of the Alaska Statutes, the Alaska Administrative Code, bills, journals and committee minutes. As of September 29, 2026, a search of the statutes for "tanning" lists one section, AS 16.05.940, where the word appears in the fish-and-game definition of taxidermy. A search of the Administrative Code returns two game rules, 5 AAC 92.165 and 92.170, on sealing hides before they are tanned. Neither touches a tanning salon.

The search reads the body of each section, not only its heading: the same index finds "ultraviolet" inside water-treatment and shellfish rules in Title 18 of the Administrative Code, and "hairdressing" inside the licensing sections of AS 08.13. A search for the word "sunlamp" and phrase searches for "tanning facility" and "tanning salon" return nothing in any source.

Alaska does license some personal-care shops. AS 08.13 has the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers license barbering, hairdressing, hair braiding, manicuring, esthetics, tattooing, permanent cosmetic coloring and body piercing, and it sets a minors rule for tattooing and piercing (AS 08.13.217). Tanning is not in that list. City and borough rules are outside this page, so check with your local government before you open.

At the front desk

With no state tanning law, what happens at your desk is your own policy. Most salons in states like this still run the same basics:

  1. Pick a minimum age and write it down. Alaska sets none, so the choice, and whether a parent can sign for a younger client, is yours.
  2. Take a date of birth for every client before their first UV session, so your age policy can be checked.
  3. Have each client sign a warning statement before their first session. No Alaska law requires one; our tanning consent form guide covers what one usually contains.
  4. Follow the exposure schedule and maximum time on each unit's label. Federal rules cover the equipment itself; see our FDA tanning bed rules guide.
  5. Keep your own visit and incident records. No state retention period or injury-report deadline applies.

What changed recently

Nothing. As of September 29, 2026, the Legislature's search finds no bill containing the word "tanning" in the 2025-2026 session. The same filter finds 2025-2026 bills containing "hairdressing", including HB 243 on the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers, so the bill index does cover the current session. Across all sessions since 1993, the bills the search lists for "tanning" are two 2009-2010 resolutions that name a foreign ambassador, Namik Tan, and SB 170 of 2005-2006, a bill on the powers and duties of the fish and game boards and department. None is a tanning-facility bill.

How TanVision helps

TanVision's minimum age is 18 by default, and a session cannot start without a date of birth on file. If your house policy bars minors from UV beds, set Minors and UV rooms to No at Settings > Tanning rules: check-in then refuses UV rooms to a client under the minimum age even with guardian consent on file, while consent still opens spray and red light rooms. At Yes, the default, consent on file lets a younger client start a session in any room, UV included, with only a warning on screen.

Clients sign your warning statement on their own phone or a tablet with consent forms, and each signed record keeps the signature and the exact wording. A session cannot start without a signed statement on file. Exposure safety refuses any typed time above the room's own maximum, and each client record shows recent visits newest first, consent status and notes. TanVision has no re-sign interval. With a USB 2D barcode scanner, Scan ID reads the barcode on the back of a US or Canadian driver's license or ID card, fills in the client's name, date of birth, address and sex, and records the day the ID was checked; it does not compare the photo with the person. Compare other states on the tanning laws by state page.

Common questions

What is the legal age to tan in Alaska?
Alaska has no state minimum age for indoor tanning. A full-text search of the Alaska Statutes and Administrative Code finds no tanning-facility law, so any age limit is the salon's own policy or a local rule.
Can a minor use a tanning bed in Alaska with a parent's permission?
No Alaska statute or regulation addresses it either way. Whether you allow minors, and whether a parent must sign or be present, is your salon's policy. Check your city or borough for local rules.
Do I need a state license to open a tanning salon in Alaska?
We found none. The state's shop licensing law, AS 08.13, covers barbering, hairdressing, esthetics, manicuring, tattooing, body piercing and related practices, and tanning is not among them. Local business licenses and permits may still apply.
Does Alaska require a signed tanning waiver?
No state law requires one. Many salons use a signed warning statement as house policy; our tanning consent form guide covers what one usually contains.
